KELTNER, TIPPS, WALKER, and MIZELL SEASON CHAMPIONS
CJ Raceway wrapped up a rough season thanks to mother nature and the flood of 2008 on Friday, August 22 with Season Championship Night sponsored by Island Auto Salvage. Features were ran in all four divisions, along with powder puff and mechanics races, and then the awards presatation followed.
Travis Yakle started outside the front row in the 4 Cylinder feature and had the lead early on. Jordan Tipps pulled the caution on lap 2. Due to someone jumping on the restart, the green was not thrown, however the field bunched up with John Whalen getting sideways and Geoff Theobald making contact. Both cars rolled and were done for the night. On the restart it was Yakle, Bryar Keltner, and Bill Whalen, Jr. By lap 8 Tyler Whalen made his way around Bill for third place. Yakle picked up his third feature win of the year, Keltner took second and the point championship, and Tyler Whalen finished third.
Brian Tipps led the first lap of the hobby stock feature before Aaron Summy took the lead at the flag on the second lap. On lap 4 Tipps went high allowing Jeremy Tompkins to take second. One lap later, Tipps, Tompkins, and Alex Buffington came three wide out of turn 4 with Tipps in second, Buffington in third, and Tompkins in fourth. Alex Buffington took second on the frontstretch on lap 8. Summy goes on to take the win, Buffington takes second, and Tipps takes third and is the 2008 point champion.
Teammates Scott Walker and Paul Hallett were in first and second on the mod-lite feature with Jeff Norton in third. On lap 7 Norton went low coming out of turn 4 for second. The next lap, Norton went low going down the backstretch to take the lead. Norton holds on for his third feature win, Hallett takes second, and Walker finishes third and is the 2008 point champion.
Shelly Mizell started on the pole and led the first 6 laps of the IMCA feature before going high in turn 4 and rolling. Mizell was okay, but the car was done for the night. On the restart it was Tad Payne followed by Aaron Summy. Payne held Summy off for the next 5 laps, but coming out of turn 4 for the checker they were bouncing off of each other with Summy taking the checkers. Payne took second and Randy Phillips finished third. Mizell is the 2008 point champion.
