KURT KILE SCORES FIRST CJ RACEWAY FEATURE WIN
NEW FACES IN CJ RACEWAY WINNER’S CIRCLE
Bill Whalen, Jr. Jim Lynch, Travis Finke, and Jordan Schram picked up their first 2008 feature wins at CJ Raceway on Friday, August 8, 2008 during Columbus Junction State Bank Night while Jeff Norton made a return visit.
Josh Green led the first lap of the 4 Cylidner feature with Wayne Noble in second and Bill Whalen, Jr. in third. Green’s car quit in turn 2, bringing out the caution and sending him to the rear. On the restart, Noble’s car was off the pace, with Whalen, Jr. passing for the lead and Geoff Theobald following for second. On lap 5 Theobald went low in turns 3 and 4 pulling up to the side of Whalen, Jr., but Whalen, Jr. held him off. Theobald then faded before pulling into the pits on lap 7 and on lap 8 Bryar Keltner moved into second with Tyler Whalen in third. Coming around for the white flag Keltner and Whalen were side-by-side with Whalen taking the second place spot at the flag. Coming around for the checker flag Whalen went high in turn 4 losing 4 spots. Whalen Jr. held on for his first feature win, Darin Smith took second, and Keltner finished third.
The hobby stock class had veterans Jeremy Tompkins and Brian Tipps in the first row with newcomers Jim Lynch, Jacob Smith, and Jeremy Pundt in the second and third row. The caution was out after the first lap when a tire blew on Lynch’s car. He was able to change the tire and make it back out on the track without going a lap down. The next lap around saw Tipps and Tompkins come out of turn 4 side-by-side with the rest of the field three wide right behind them. Tipps had the lead by the checkers with Tompkins in second. However, Tompkins car died on the way into the pits in turn 2. Tipps kept the lead with Lynch moving into second. The rest of the race had fans on their feet as Tipps and Lynch battled for the lead. On lap 6 Lynch went low coming out of turn 4 to take the lead. However Tipps went high coming out of turn 2 on the next lap to take the point back. Two laps later Tipps went a little too high coming out of turn 2 and Lynch got by. Lynch went on to score the win at his first trip to the CJ Raceway, Tipps took second, and Smith finished third.
Travis Finke started on the pole and led the flag-to-flag IMCA feature picking up his first win of the 2008 season at the CJ Raceway. Jeremy Tompkins challenged him for the lead from second with Shelly Mizell in third. Mizell remains the point leader, with Tompkins gaining a point and cutting her lead to 2.
Jordan Schram had the pole for the B-mod feature, but was sent to the tail for jumping on the start. Phillip Beard wasted no time taking the point with Levi Smith in second and Jim Gillenwater in third. On lap 4 Gillenwater, Smith, and Schram were three wide coming through turns 3 and 4 with Gillenwater taking second, Smith third, and Schram fourth. On the next lap Smith spun in turn 4, bringing out the caution. Gillenwater went low in turn 4 to take the lead on the next lap with Beard in second and Schram in third. However, Beard spun in turn 2, pulling the caution and sending him to the rear. On the restart it’s Gillenwater, Schram, and Mark Winkel. Schram went low coming out of turn 4 and took the lead on the restart. He went on to hold off Gillenwater and pick up the win. Gillenwater took second with Beau Taylor finishing third.
David Norton had the lead early on in the mod-lite feature with Jeff Norton in second by lap 2. By lap 3 though Jeff had taken the lead, David Norton moved to second, with Paul Hallett following in third. On lap 6 the caution was out for Rob Conklin when he spun in turn 4. After the caution Michael Dominguez’s car died on the frontstretch. Dominguez was taken to the pits, and Conklin got on the tail of the pack. Jeff Norton holds on to pick up his second feature win in a new car, David Norton takes second, Hallett finishes third.
