KELTNER & HEMSTED SCORE FIRST WINS

After a week off of racing due to rain, the drivers were more than ready to go and it showed in an action packed night of racing at the CJ Raceway on Friday, June 8, 2007. Trophies were sponsored by Rumors and Excuses in a night that saw Daniel Keltner and Dave Hemsted make their first trips to victory lane in the 4 Cylinder and IMCA Stock classes respectively while Jeremy Tompkins, Kevin Kile, and Brett Timmerman made return visits. The 2007 CJ Raceway Relay For Life Favorite Driver plaques were awarded at intermission with Amanda Tipps for 4 cylinders, Jeremy Tompkins for hobby stocks, Brandon Jay for IMCA Stock, Brian Hetlzer for late model, and Matt Gomez for CJ Cruiser. Jeremy Tompkins was the overall winner receiving the most “votes”.

Fresh off a heat win Amanda Tipps held the lead in the 4 cylinder feature that was off to a slow start due to multiple cautions due to some impatient drivers. The first caution was thrown when Peter Stauffer cut through the infield and just when it looked like he was going to save it and spare the caution, he hit the tire coming out of turn 2, pushing it onto the racetrack and into the path of Jacob Brown who drove over the top of it. During the caution Dustin Holliday rolled in turn 3, but after a pit stop and a change of tires, he was back out on the track, one lap down. On the restart it was Larry Koehler and heat winner Amanda Tipps making up the first row when the caution was out again for Michael Frank II who rolled in turn 1. Finally a lap was scored before James Roose stopped on the frontstretch pulling another caution during which Dustin Holliday rolled again in turn 3, but this time landed on his wheels and drove back onto the track to finish the race. On the restart it was Tipps, Wayne Noble, and Daniel Keltner, but Keltner used the restart to take over second. Tipps held off Keltner for 3 more laps before coming out of turn 2 Keltner took the lead. Keltner went on to score his first 2007 feature win. Tipps took second and Noble took third.

The IMCA stock car feature had many on the edges of their seats as it was three wide racing clear through the turns. Todd Staley had the point with Travis Finke in second and Randy Phillips in third when a caution was thrown on lap 2 for Brian Freitag in turn 2. On the restart Dave Hemsted takes the third spot from Phillips, but one lap later Phillips is back in third and the caution is out for Darrin Ealey in turn 2. Hemsted uses the caution again to gain back the third place spot. Aaron Summy soon makes his way up to fourth and second through fourth soon are racing three wide through turns three and four with Hemsted taking the lead at the flagstand on lap 11. Summy advances into second, but a caution is out for Justin Gesling in turn 2, going back to the last lap. It's Hemsted, Staley, and Summy on the restart, with Summy quickly taking second. On the next lap Staley gets caution in a wreck sending him to the pits. Hemsted holds off summy to take his first 2007 win, Summy takes second and the points lead, and Randy Phillips finishes third.

Brian Tipps drew the early caution in the hobby stock feature. On the restart Jeremy Tompkins charged to the lead and didn’t look back to pick up his third feature win of the year. Bill Faler followed in second with Doug Eichelberger in third early on, but Shane Richardson took over the third place spot by lap 5 in his first appearance at the track for 2007. Tompkins scores the win with Faler taking second and Richardson finishing third.

Greg Rossell was out front for the mod-lite feature with Troy Philpit in second and fighting for the lead. Coming around for lap 5, Rossell and Philpot were side by side coming out of turn 4 and at the flag it was Philpot with the lead. However, one lap later Philpot went high coming out of turn 4, handing the lead back to Rossell. The two went on to battle the rest of the race, but Rossell came out on top, scoring his second feature win. Philpot took second with James Chesmore in third.

Kevin Kile, Hal Russell, and Jay Chenoweth made up the top three in the Pepsi late model feature for the first lap before Russell went high in turns 3 and 4 and Chenoweth went low for the second place spot. The top two continued to battle for the lead while Tom Darbyshire made his way up through the packing, taking third on lap 10. Kile goes on to pick up another win with Chenoweth taking second and Darbyshire third in his first appearance in 2007.

One lap into the CJ Cruiser feature and the caution was out for Darren Wilson and Duane Rees on the backstretch. On the restart, Brett Timmerman had the lead with Matt Gomez in second, and Troy Wonders in third. Timmerman held off the pack to pick up his second feature win of the year with Gomez taking second and Wonders third.

Next week trophies will be sponsored by Midwest Rod and Restoration with a candy dash sponsored by Triple D Motorsports.
